Redding to go Contra dancing

The Redding International Folk Dancers will be sponsoring a Redding Community Contra Dance in a couple of weeks.

Contra is a form of energetic American folk dancing a lot like English and Scottish country set dances. The organizers promise the dance is easy to learn and a lot of fun. Singles or couples will be welcome, and children are invited too.

In contra-dancing, dancers stand in parallel lines each facing a partner. At the caller’s instructions, each couple interacts with the couple next to them. As the dance progresses, the couple moves up and down the floor interacting with all the other couples in their line.
Lenore Frigo will be calling the dances and Curvy Road will be providing the live music. Each dance will be proceeded by instructions for that particular dance. This style of dancing requires only walking steps.

It will be a good idea for dancers to wear comfortable shoes and bring their own refreshments, although water will be available for $1. There will be complimentary finger food.

Those interested will want to mark their Calendars for Saturday, May 21. The event will take place at 100F/Rebekah Hall, 22551 Silverlode Ln, Palo Cedro, beginning at 7:00 pm and running until 10:00pm. Beginners should arrive around 7:00 pm in order to get some instruction before the calling, which will start at 7:30 pm.
