Redding holds bagpipe competition

Saint Florian Pipers Society will be holding its annual Redding Bagpipe Competition: Piping and Drumming, also known as the Tinman Competition, for two days in early March.

This will be a regional solo piping competition, and all judges have been qualified by either the BCPBA (British Columbia Pipers' Association) or WUSPBA (The Western United States Pipe Band Association).

Piobaireachd will be required in Grade 1 through Grade 4. This is the classical ceremonial, expressive, historical music associated with the Highland bagpipe and is considered the most prestigious of the components of the competition.

Grades 1 and 2 will have a component that includes one march, one strathspey (music with "dot-cut" rhythm) and one reel played in non-stop succession, referred to by the abbreviation MSR. Grades 1 and 2 will also be required to play a hornpipe or jig and a 6/8 march.

Grades 3, 4, and 5 will need to play a 2/4 march and 6/8 march, and Grades 3 and 4 will play a strathspey/reel. The beginner Grade 1 entrants will play a slow march as well.

The winner of the Grade 1 competition will go on to the Sunbelt Invitational Piping Competition.

Organizers of competitions like this often get their paper items, such as participation and winner certificates, made at local Print shops.

The Redding Annual Bagpipe Competition will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, at Red Lion Hotel Redding, 1830 Hilltop Drive.
