Before the 4th of July grilling and fireworks, many here in Redding will be lacing their tennis shoes and heading over to the Signarama Firecracker 5k.
Registration for the 5k, open to ages five and up, is $25, or $10 for Little Sparklers running a quarter of a mile. Swag will include commemorative T-Shirts sporting a red, white, and blue event graphic design, and medals will go to Little Sparkler participants, as well as to groups and runners wearing patriotic outfits.
The singing of the Star-Spangled Banner and reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance will be part of the opening ceremony, beginning at 8:00 am.
The quarter-mile Little Sparkler Run/Walk for kids 10 and under will follow the ceremony at 8:15 am, and the 4.4k Fun Run/Walk/Stroll will begin after that at 8:45 am. After all that exercise, participants will be treated to a full pancake breakfast with a mimosa bar put on by The Asphalt Cowboys. Registration comes with one free ticket, and tickets for non-participants will be $5.
Family and friends may receive emails or texts when their runners cross the timing equipment placed on the course. The alert information is transmitted by the chips in the race bibs.
The Signarama Firecracker 5k will begin at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park, 1335 Arboretum Drive, on July 4 at 8:00 am.
