Redding looks forward to Memorial Day Weekend

Redding will hold at least two events over Memorial Day weekend - a Memorial Day service for those wishing to honor deceased veterans, and the California River Quest for those eager to brave the rapids for a good cause.

The 28th annual Shasta County Veterans Memorial Day Service will take place Sunday, May 30 beginning at 11:00 am. Individuals and organizations are invited to lay wreaths. Pre-registration is required, and guests are encouraged to bring shade umbrellas.

After the ceremony, there will be a complimentary lunch outdoors and to-go options will be available. The ceremony will take place at Redding Civic Auditorium, 700 Auditorium Drive.

Also on May 30, local athletes will be heading for The California River Quest, a paddling experience on the Upper Sacramento River. The event will feature both a competition for competitive paddlers and an outdoor adventure for others.

Courses available will be the 25-mile Challenge Quest (from Redding to Anderson), 50-mile Ultra-Marathon Quest (from Redding to Red Bluff), and the 100-mile Endurance Quest (from Redding to Chico). Entrants may use surf skis, outrigger canoes, kayaks, canoes, or standup and prone paddleboards.

Friends and families of contestants in competitions such as this often get some banner printing done beforehand to welcome their athlete at the finish line. Proceeds from California River Quest will go to Friends of the River.

Registration for the event will be $100. Times and river entry locations will be emailed upon registration.
