Play to Czech out in Redding next week

Redding locals looking to get out of the house and enjoy some music and drama will have a chance to do so very soon, as Shasta College offers a presentation of Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s ‘The Bartered Bride’.

The three-part opera is humorous in nature and follows the antics of a pair of lovers, Mařenka and Jeník, who wish to marry, but are restrained by the bride-to-be’s parents who wish her to marry a man the young woman has never met. Much arguing ensues with a broker brought in to make the deal. Others become embroiled in the process, creating upheaval in the small village.

This opera is reminiscent, in some ways, to ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. The show will feature bright costumes and scenery, together with plenty of song and dance.

Those who plan to attend the opera may wish to make sure their digital Business Cards are up to date, as the evening promises to be a good night for networking.

The opera will be presented at the Shasta College Theatre, 11555 Old Oregon Trail, Redding, Thursday, January 28 through Saturday, January 30 at 7:00 pm. It will be shown again on the weekend of February 5 and 6, also at 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door for $12, or $8 for students.
