UC Merced offers "office hours" for new businesses

UC Merced's Venture Lab is offering an "office hours" program for lab members in a move to soften the difficulties and stress that can come with starting up a new business.

Just as students might attend a professor's office hours for help with a class, new business owners will have an opportunity to sit down with business experts, as well as lawyers, and benefit from expert advice.

The Venture Lab, in association with UC Berkeley Law School, is offering free legal assistance for low-income business owners. The new program offers help with various legal issues a new business can face, such as forming a legal entity, hiring employees, protecting copyrights, and complying with regulations. Help is available in English, Spanish, and Mandarin, with all the protections of attorney-client privilege being in effect.

The Lab is the flagship program of UC Merced's Innovation and Entrepreneurship department, which aims to stimulate economic growth in the Merced area by providing resources for new businesses. In addition to the new "office hours" program, UC can match up members with business consultants and other advisors who can advise on matters such as Logo Design, identifying customers, marketing using printing services, and managing finances. The group also holds regular events and offers funding for technological development. Similar labs have been launched in Modesto and Atwater.
