Merced's HOW looks to honor special individuals

HOW Merced (the acronym standing for Honoring One Woman) is looking to bring a personal touch to charity days, with monthly events that look to celebrate and benefit a single woman for in the Merced Area for her contributions to the to the community.

This month's benefit dinner, held tomorrow (April 18) at Five Ten Bistro, pays tribute to April Silva.

Silva is a social worker known for her work with mentally challenged adults. The benefit is designed to help her be with her family as they struggle through a difficult time. The event features a banquet, a raffle, and a chance for attendees to nominate the next month's honoree.

HOW Merced has defined its unusual strategy for philanthropy as part of a mission to create:

"…a world where everyone is willing to provide comfort and support to another person when they need hope restored to their life."

Focusing on local, individual causes presents its own set of challenges. Small-scale charity events often have to be crafty in order to get the word out, often using social media and local Print shops for things like banner printing. Telling personal stories can often be difficult and trying for the individuals being supported, but such a process can lead to greater community with the capability of uniting for mutual aid.
