Playhouse Merced Community Theater, the California city's premier theater company, will be staging a popular and critically acclaimed musical of recent vintage.
The play, "Next to Normal", examines how mental illness impacts a suburban family. Theater fans in Southern California, far removed from Broadway, will be anticipating the March production of the rock-inspired musical.
Based on a book by Brian Yorkey and with music by Tom Kitt, Next to Normal is about a mother suffering from bipolar disorder and her family's attempts to cope with it. The musical premiered off-Broadway in 2008, where it received plaudits and gained a cult following, before making its Broadway debut the following spring. In 2010, it received three Tonys, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making it the first musical to win the award in 16 years.
Playhouse Merced is an amateur theater company. Such productions often rely on local Print shops for program and poster printing, as well as other local businesses like costume shops. The venue has been around for over 20 years, and has become one of the small city's biggest attractions. Its website states that their budget and professionalism is in line with the major company of a city two or three times Merced's size.
Next to Normal premieres this Sunday, March 18, and runs for several weekends afterwards.
