Two-part series to be presented on history of Lafayette

The Lafayette Historical Society will be hosting a discussion about the history of the Lafayette Cemetery, complemented with a tour of the site.

Mary McCosker, who was born and raised in Lafayette and is an author of local history Books about the city, will first give a talk on the history of the cemetery. She will present interesting tales of the founders of Lafayette to both adults and children as told from stories in the Lafayette Cemetery.

The following week, attendees will visit the cemetery, where Benjamin Shreve (who named the city) and Jennie Bickerstaff Rosenberg (the first teacher in the city) are buried in the cemetery. Also buried there are a veteran of the Civil War, a bullwhacker, a nurse from World War II, and a man with his dog.

McCosker is the co-author of two Images of America books: ‘Building the Caldecott Tunnel’ and ‘Lafayette’. She is a trustee for the Alamo-Lafayette Cemetery District and teaches third grade children in town about the history of Lafayette, including giving them tours of the cemetery.

The talk will be this Sunday, July 17, followed by the tour on Sunday, July 24. Both events begin at 2:00 pm.

Most likely, the Historical Society has turned to a postcard printing company to create a mailer that can be sent to residents to promote this special speaker series.
