Lafayette Death Star helps promote raging Star Wars fever

With the release of ‘Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens’ just a few days away, one Lafayette homeowner has taken his love of the popular franchise to new heights - his roof, to be specific.

It was October when Colby Powell and two dozen neighbors erected the massive, LED-lit replica of the Death Star on the roof of his Happy Valley Glen Road home. Since then, he and his roof have been the subject of newspaper articles, YouTube videos, and interviews.

Powell says:

“We kept it a secret that it would be a Death Star. It just kind of showed up as the Death Star about a week before Halloween.”

Powell said the idea came up during his family’s annual chili supper. He and his neighbors were discussing what type of Halloween decorations he would be putting up this year, and the idea of incorporating Star Wars in honor of the new movie came up. While it was intended to be just another fun project for the neighbors and kids, services like local Print shops have got involved and are now offering professional photos of Powell’s home on their Holiday Cards.

Powell seems to have created a bona fide Lafayette landmark, at least, until he takes it down. He says:

“I have not gotten one complaint. Not to me, at least. People just want to come by and check it out. They say, ‘I wanna live in this neighborhood. That seems fun’.”
