The All-Gershwin evening features the work of George Gershwin in a concert designed to replicate one that occurred in 1932 in New York City. On that evening, the first all-Gershwin concert ever given featured the composer’s most celebrated works, and a selection of popular songs for orchestra and piano. Gershwin himself effused:
“It was, I really believe, the most exciting night I have ever had.”
The upcoming concert will be conducted by Lionel Bringular, a former Associate Conductor with the L.A. Philharmonic. The program features Gershwin’s music with special guest stars. The program comprises the “Cuban Overture,” “Variations on ‘I Got Rhythm’,” and a selection of songs. The second half of the program features two of Gershwin’s most famous compositions, “Rhapsody in Blue” and “An American in Paris.” The latter inspired both a 1951 film with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, and a stage version based on the film. The stage musical opened in Paris in 2014 and on Broadway in 2015.
The guest stars for the concert are Broadway star actor Tony Yazbeck; Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a French pianist; and mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, who is in great demand and regularly appears at the Metropolitan Opera.
The All-Gershwin evening is July 11 at the Hollywood Bowl. Organizers of events like this will often use poster printing to create advertising for them.
