A concert in Hollywood will soon offer a mix of works from jazz to classical to movie music.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic will be at the Hollywood Bowl under the baton of their music director, Gustavo Dudamel, for the “We Love LA” performance. The concert is free to support first responders and members of the community who have suffered due to the wildfires.
The evening begins with “The Star Spangled Banner,” and then moves to “Kauyumari,” a work by Gabriela Ortiz, a contemporary composer from Mexico City. “Kauyumari” translated from the Huichol, which is an Indigenous language spoken in Mexico, means “blue deer, ‘ a creature that acts as a spiritual guide in Huichol folklore.
Next on the program is an Adagietto from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. The work is scored for the string section only, plus a solo harp, and is thought to be a love song from Mahler to his wife. The Adagietto is popular and often played as a concert piece.
Pianist Gerald Clayton, who has been nominated for the Grammy six times, joins the orchestra for the jazz classic “Variations on ‘I Got Rhythm’” by George Gershwin, and the second half of the program is devoted to the music of John Williams, featuring songs from the films “Superman,” “Jurassic Park,” “Harry Potter,” and “Star Wars.”
