Flogging Molly formed in 1994 in Los Angeles, led by Dave King, an Irish vocalist. He put together a band with Bridget Regan, Ted Hutt, Jeff Peters, and Paul Crowder, who began playing rock mixed with traditional Irish music, with poetic lyrics written by King. They played each week at Molly Malone’s, a pub in Los Angeles, and began to build a following.
As their fanbase grew, they changed their name and continued to build a following thanks to a grueling touring schedule. They have been a stalwart presence in punk music for over 20 years, starting with “Swagger,” their debut album, which they released in 2000. They have continued to record, dropping another six albums with the latest, “Anthem,” appearing in 2022. A review in New Noise said that the album “Anthem”:
“. . . easily satisfies expectations the Celtic-inspired punks have built over a decades-long career.”
The American Songwriter magazine said simply:
“Flogging Molly is back.”
In 2024, Flogging Molly held the first Shamrock Rebellion, a two-day festival. They are continuing that tradition with the next Shamrock Rebellion, which they are planning for Hollywood.
