The Fremont Police Department has initiated a program to test using a Tesla as a patrol vehicle.
The program was introduced to assist in reducing greenhouse gases in the city, with an expected reduction of 25% by 2020, based on a 2005 baseline.
The city purchased a 2014 Tesla Model S to replace an aging vehicle which was no longer usable. The police department customized the vehicle with standard equipment, including a light bar and ballistic barriers.
The purchase of the Tesla was the result of a team assembled by the city to research whether this vehicle could help reduce emissions. Teslas, which have zero emissions, are becoming increasingly popular in cities and towns nationwide.
