Motor firm gears up for 2016

Palo-Alto-based Tesla Motors recently signed a lease to occupy a 500,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Fremont, effectively eliminating the last plant vacancy left over from the Silicon Valley solar events of 2011.

This comes hot on the heels of the car manufacturer’s announcement of several new models and a host of new showrooms around the country, and only enhances the general buzz about the Nevada-based “Gigafactory” it announced in 2013.

Tesla’s new Fremont facility is expected to host several hundred jobs, starting with roughly 100 manufacturing positions and 50 engineering vacancies, and then adding finance, IT, legal and other job types as needed. In response, several local printing companies have offered their services to help local professionals design new resumes in anticipation of going back to work. It’s hoped that many ex-Solyndra employees will apply to help demonstrate that alternative power is still alive and well in Silicon Valley.

Christina Briggs, Fremont’s Economic Development Manager, said:

“The absorption of 901 Page would not only mean normalization of the city’s vacancy rates, but also reaffirms Fremont’s strength in the region for advanced manufacturing with all the former Solyndra facilities now transitioned to other Silicon Valley advanced industry heavyweights.”

Though Tesla has had bared some Solyndra-like political accusations in the past, the company is demonstrating a strong pattern of success. According to CEO Elon Musk, it should be able to grow by about 50% per year for the foreseeable future.
