Fremont to host bird watching event for children

The Family Bird Walk event at the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is coming to Fremont this summer.

The free, family-friendly event is aimed at children 5-10, though all are welcome. With a focus on nature education and creating bird watching guides, participants will hit the trail and try to identify some of the species out in the wild.

The program is taught by Ken Roux and includes a limited number of binoculars that people can borrow.

The nature walk and bird-watching event takes place at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a 30,000-acre piece of land at the edge of Silicon Valley with entire ecosystem of species to its name. That includes birds that migrate to and from the area, numbering in the millions each year, as well as endangered species.

The refuge, founded in 1972, also includes public access opportunities for people to get up close to nature. Other activities of the area include a yearly waterfowl hunting season, fishing, wildlife viewing, photography, painting and biking.

Bird watching events like this may choose to use printing services to create activity guides, booklets or other educational material.

The Family Bird Walk event is happening on July 19 from noon to 2 p.m. at the San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center at 2 Marshlands Road in Fremont.
