Studio Ghibli fans will have a chance to make needle punch coasters resembling famous characters as part of a workshop at the Galerie Artax in Fremont this spring.
The three-hour long workshop welcomes veterans of the art form and beginners alike. People can show up with zero knowledge or supplies and they will be guided, step by step, on how to make needle punch coasters, with three popular Studio Ghibli designs to choose from.
The characters include Totoro and the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro, and Jiji the black cat from Kiki’s Delivery Service. Each of these characters varies widely in size in the films. However, the coaster design focuses on their faces, making them fairly uniform in size.
Needle punching is a technique of interlocking fabrics together by using hand-held needles. It requires a number of supplies, including monks cloth, punch needles, and yarns. However, the workshop will include all of these materials.
The instructor of the workshop is Piscola Mami and the event includes snacks and water.
