Ohlone College is offering free classes to students at Fremont High School and Newark High School through its Connection program. Students will attend high school during the day but take the classes in the evenings, which will earn them college credits.
Taking the college classes through this program enables students to get a head start on their credits, and the classes are free. Colleges holding initiatives like this often partner with local Print shops to use their brochure printing services, outlining the details and requirements of what they offer.
Students enrolled in this program will take their high school classes at the Ohlone Campus in the morning. During the afternoon, students can take whatever college level classes they want. Although they will not be on the high school campus, they will still be fully involved in their senior year activities, such as grad night and the senior ball. These students will also walk across their high school stage at graduation.
Many students added that the ability to attend school at the college took them away from some of the high school diversions and enabled them to more easily focus on their studies. They also like the ability to become familiar with the college campus prior to enrolling there full time. One student, Jorel Sarmiento, was so enthusiastic about the opportunity that he created a video to share with other students about the programs benefits.
Students wishing to participate do need to keep their grades up and meet minimum academic and GPA requirements.
