Fremont preps to prune roses

In anticipation of a rose pruning day, the Friends of California Nursery Historical Park is putting together two separate events to help rose enthusiasts and newcomers alike get ready.

The Rose Pruning Workshop and Rose Care Talk will provide lots of handy information for people of all skill levels.

The workshop will be led by two expert rosarians from the SJ Heritage Garden. They will demonstrate best practices as to when and where to prune roses, give advice on ideal bush size and bloom type, and discuss the ideal pruning tools. Afterwards participants will get to practice a little bit on live rose bushes. Shears and gloves are recommended.

The Rose Care Talk will be given by Jolene Adams, president of the American Rose Society. She will talk about the best kinds of soil, fertilizer, and placement for rose bushes, as well as good companion plants that can go alongside roses to make a garden really stand out. She will also take questions after the talk and visitors can seek out informational Brochures at the location afterwards.

The Rose Pruning Workshop will take place on January 10 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon at Shinn Park. The Rose Care Talk will be on January 15 starting at 9:30 am at Dale’s Hardware, located at 3700 Thornton Ave. Admission is free to the public. Anyone interested in more information can visit the website or Facebook page.
