The city of Fremont has received a $12mgrant from the state to work on its Sabercat Extension Project.
The Fremont City Council rubber-stamped plans in place to extend the trail beyond Interstate 680 and connect it to the Sabercat Historical Park. The extension will also be connected to the East Bay Greenway Trail and the upcoming site of the Irvington BART station. The city expects to spend a total of $74.7m on the entire project over several phases.
Senator Bob Wieckowski presented the symbolic check of the state’s grant to Mayor Lily Wei at a ceremony held in the middle of October. The senator said that the $12m will be used to pay for the north trail’s extension that will reach Irvington BART Station and to purchase three properties that will be required for the extension. Senator Wieckowski also said that he believed that the project would boost Fremont’s trail connectivity and significance in paleontology, which is why he supports it so strongly.
Fremont also received another $5.7m from California’s Department of Natural Resources early in 2020 to fund the project's early planning, design work, and environmental clearance. The finalized design should be agreed upon by the end of 2022 and construction is expected to begin in mid-2023.
