Fremont goes on a walk for the dead

Residents in Fremont are getting ready to celebrate Dia de los Muertos in downtown this year.

The 2016 Niles Altar Walk is centred on The Day of the Dead, which is a traditional celebration of All Saint’s Day in Mexico and places with large Latino communities. One common practice surrounds the building of altars, or ‘ofrendas’. The altars are decorated with candles and pictures of lost loved ones, as well as toys for children who have passed and glasses of tequila or jars of atole (a hot corn beverage) for adults. Some people even decorate the altars with humorous epitaphs meant to celebrate funny and joyful stories that the celebrants want to remember.

At the Niles Altar Walk, any resident will be able to build or contribute to altars, which will be set up along one of the main streets of Fremont. Visitors will be able to view the altars, celebrate the lives of people they have lost, and come together as a community to mark the occasion.

Refreshments will be served and some entertainment will also be provided. Additionally, food carts will be on site selling a variety of traditional Mexican food, including tacos, and burritos.

The 2016 Niles Altar Walk will be held on November 2 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Niles Town Plaza. Admission is free to the public. Anyone interested in more information should check the Flyers or visit the website.
