Foodies impressed by local ice cream creation

When Cardinali’s Ice Cream does its next flyer printing run, the headline is likely to read, ‘Home of Alameda County Fair’s Grand Champion Spaghetti Ice Cream’.

Cardinali’s, along with seven other vendors, took part in this year’s first ever ‘Snackdown’ event. It is a contest Marketing Manager Angel Moore hopes will become a permanent feature at the summer event.

Three titles (‘Best Taste’, ‘Most Creative’, and ‘Best Theme’) were awarded at the 90-minute competition, which took place on the Festival Square Stage and was hosted by KCBS Foodie Chap’s Liam Marcus. Cardinali’s creation not only won the Best Taste title; it also garnered the ‘Grand Champion’ award.

Tony Cardinali invented an extruder that turns out ice cream “noodles”. For his winning entry, he created a sundae that combines vanilla gelato “spaghetti” topped with strawberry sauce, grated white chocolate, and a garnish of mint that served as the delicacy’s alternative to basil.

The faux pasta plate was judged against gastronomic delights like Pickled Dog and Drunken Pickle Poppers, served up by Get Pickled. Other entries included a patriotic pizza in the colors of the American flag, a dish that combined macaroni cheese with a bacon burger, deep fried cheese, and lobster fries.

For Fremont food fans who like the sound of any of these creations, they can all be found through July 6 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.
