What's Happening in Fremont, CA…

City employees to receive pay raise

Just about every person employed by the city of Fremont will be getting a pay raise this year.

The biggest raises will be given to the city’s police officers, firefighters, and battalion chiefs. Their paychecks will increase by 17% spread out over the fiscal year, dating back to July 1. Most of the other city employees will get pay raises worth about 14%.

The city manager and the city attorney got pay raises worth 5%. The city council also voted to give the mayor and future members of the city council raises worth 8% and they go into effect after the election in November.

In total, the pay raises could result in the city spending $3.9m more than what was budgeted for this fiscal year. The city’s finance director feels that the total cost will likely be higher because other costs such as overtime were not factored in.

Fremont’s mayor, Lily Mei, pointed out that the pay raises will be necessary to help fill the many vacant public safety positions, so there is still reason for local jobseekers to update their résumés and business cards. Mayor Lily Mei also said:

“I think it’s important for us to fully fund our public safety, such as law enforcement and first responders.”

The general consensus among the city’s officials is that the city will be able to rebalance the budget in the fall without having to dip into its $51.6m worth of reserves.
