Covina hosts free e-waste recycling event

E-waste is something people can recycle for free, thanks to an event in Covina at the Smart & Final facility this spring.

Most electronic devices are accepted, though there are some exceptions. In addition, some larger appliances will require a fee to recycle.

The event is being put on by the Covina Chamber of Commerce and lasts for an entire weekend in May.

Most people have consumer electronics in their homes. However, when those pieces of equipment reach the end of their life or are no longer usable, they become e-waste. E-waste can including items that are in full working condition or that are completely broken.

Equipment that will be accepted at the event to be processed for recycling for free include home entertainment systems, mother boards, landline or cell phones, personal digital assistants, laptops, toner cartridges, TVs, computers, small portable devices, board systems, main frame units, scanners, fax machines, copiers, printers, power supplies, VCRS, DVD players and car and forklift batteries.

Major appliances like microwaves can be recycled for a service charge. Items that are not accepted include home batteries and florescent tubes.

Waste recycling facilities may choose to use graphic design to help with branding and promotional material and encourage more recycling.

The Free E-Waste Recycling Event is happening on May 3 and 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Smart & Final in Covina at 114 N. Azusa Ave.
