The Volvo Group used one of its Volvo VNL trucks to demonstrate Eco-Drive technology recently. The demonstration took place in Carson.
This new technology combines data from traffic signals with the dynamics of the vehicle being driven, to give the driver speed recommendations in real time. This means that truckers can avoid last-minute maneuvers such as swerving or slamming on the brakes, which can reduce the impact large trucks have when they drive through residential neighborhoods.
Volvo Group worked closely with a number of California groups in order to demonstrate the technology, which is part of the Zero Emission Drayage Truck Demonstration Project. The California Climate Investments program funds the project, which is headed by the South Coast Air Quality Management District. The effort is aimed at reducing key pollutants and lessening both greenhouse gases and the use of petroleum products.
The technology helps drivers in many ways. It may, for instance, sense the flow of traffic depending on what the traffic signals say, and reduce the engine rpm. Or it could mean slower acceleration or reduced use of the throttle, which the Eco-technology will apply automatically. All the municipalities throughout southern California stand to benefit if the new technology cuts down on pollution and increases road safety. Companies that equip vehicles with the new technology such as this can use brochure printing to explain the benefits to buyers.
