A new project that promises affordable housing has been approved unanimously by the Carson City Council, according to an article in the Compton Herald.
The main developer on the currently unnamed project is Thomas Safran & Associates. Safran has developed a number of projects in Carson, including The Villaggio and the Avalon Courtyard.
The housing, which comprises 51 units, is being developed with the idea of giving preference to veterans and their families. Among the amenities included in the development are a computer room, a fitness center, an outdoor courtyard complete with a grill, and a community room. In addition, free classes on subjects like financial planning will be provided to residents.
In order to pay for the project, the city is providing as much as $5.5m to offset development costs. The developer is also seeking a 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credit to help finance the new housing. If approved, the tax credit will be awarded by the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (TCAC). Construction is slated to start later this year.
Albert Robles, the mayor of Carson, says that this city is “putting its money where its mouth is” with regard to taking care of veterans. He hopes that other communities, as well as the federal government, will find ways to help those who served their country.
