Huge family event scheduled near Carson

One of the biggest events in the Carson area is on the schedule, though tickets are not yet available.

The world-famous Monaco Grand Prix inspired English promoter Chris Pook to create the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach. He believed such a race would succeed in Southern California, and chose Long Beach, right near Carson, as the site of the contest.

A route near the waterfront was laid out on the city streets, and the first race, held in 1975, drew approximately 30,000 racing fans. At the time, the event was one of the Formula 5000 series of races. Today, it is part of the IndyCar Series, which has as its crown jewel the Indianapolis 500. There are six races during the weekend, with the NTT IndyCar Series the headliner. These are the same cars that will run on Memorial Day in Indianapolis.

The race today draws as many as 200,000 spectators who enjoy a three-day weekend that combines auto racing with family-friendly activities, including concerts, exhibits of historic cars, a Family Fun Zone, and a Lifestyle Expo. Food trucks from throughout the Los Angeles area come to be part of the Food Truck Experience, and drivers hold autograph sessions.

The race this year is set for April 16-18, 2021, but organizers warn attendees to check for the status of the event closer to the date in case it has to be postponed or canceled. Banner printing can provide perfect signage for events like this.
