Waste Management, which has been hauling off Carson’s waste for 15 years, has been replaced.
City council members recently voted 3-1 to enact a contract with Gardena-based Waste Resources, Inc. (WRI), to take over this service. Some seniors and single-family homeowners will pay lower rates after the new company takes over. Homeowners will pay, on average, 35 cents less per month for the service, and bills for seniors who use 32-gallon carts will drop $2.61 per month.
However, multifamily housing units and apartment building residents will pay more, as will seniors who use larger trash carts. However, the increase will be at least partly offset by the fact the company will pick up large items for free, and provide unlimited green-waste and recycling carts.
Ken Farsing, Carson’s city manager, said there were seven bidders for the contract. Carson hired HR Green, a consulting firm, to help review the proposals. In addition, the council set up an ad hoc committee to consider solid waste removal. The committee interviewed all of the bidders, and WRI, as well as EDCO Waste, were asked to speak to the city council as a whole.
WRI is currently serving residents in Glendale, Lynwood, Torrance, Gardena, and Los Angeles County, and will begin service in Carson July 1, 2018.
Measures like this have a wide impact, so officials might work with a flyer printing company to create a mailer for residents, detailing the change.
