Carson approves new digital billboard

The City of Carson has entered into an agreement with media giant Clear Channel to place a digital billboard beside the 110 Freeway.

The billboard is 65 feet tall, and flashes a different message every eight seconds, reaching thousands of drivers daily. For allowing the installation, Carson will be paid over $3.5m over a period of 30 years.

In exchange, a static billboard of the same dimensions will be taken down from a parcel of land Metro owns near Figueroa Street, plus Clear Channel will also take down two billboard in the city, both on South Main Street.

Clear Channel will allow Carson to use the digital billboard for occasional public service announcements as space becomes available. It also intends to allow Carson-based businesses who are also members of the Carson Chamber of Commerce to advertise on the digital sign, and will give them a 10% discount.

The way the agreement is structured means Carson will first receive $100,000 for the initial five years. That amount will increase to a figure between $50,000 and $100,000 yearly, with a maximum of $140,000 annually paid in the last five years the contract runs. The total amount to be paid to Carson over the life of the contract is $3,525,000.
