The Spanish land grant
In the 1760s, the Portola expedition, part of the fabled era of Spanish exploration, reached what would become Southern California. Among those taking part was Juan Jose Dominguez, a soldier who – several years later, helped to protect Father Junipero Serra and other friars as they established the state's mission system.
Dominguez served for 30 years and, upon his retirement, was rewarded with the first land grant in California's history—75,000 acres that stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Los Angeles River, and included a number of today's cities, including Torrance and Carson. The family's homestead, known as the Dominguez Rancho, was the center of the land grant, and in 1826, Dominguez's nephew built Dominguez Ranch Adobe. The building still stands as a monument to the early days of California and Carson. Oil
