Tucson to offer senior lunch programs

A daily lunch program throughout the city of Tucson, offered by the City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department and the Pima Council on Aging, has come into force.

No doubt the two organizations are using flyer printing and poster printing to let individuals over the age of 60 and their spouses know about the Senior Lunch Program now available at eight locations in the city.

The meals are served Monday through Friday at noon and provide one third of the recommended dietary allowances for the day. Although they do not cater for special diets, they will be low in sugar, salt, and fat. Reservations need to be made for the meals one week ahead of time, and a donation of $2 per meal is requested.

Some locations are providing a Healthy Aging Program along with the lunch, with activities that will include arts and crafts, health and wellness programs, special events, speakers and day trips. There will also be an Enhance Fitness program at certain locations, with an ongoing class offering low-to-moderate exercises taught by a certified instructor. The program will include stretches, 20 minutes of low-impact aerobics, and using weights for structured strength training.

The two organizations involved, together with the Arizona Department of Economic Security/Division of Aging and Adult Services and donations from the public, are providing funds for the meals.
