Tucson presidio to hold Living History Day

Tucson area residents will soon be invited to take a step back in time at the site of the city's historic Presidio San Agustin del Tucson.

On Saturday, February 9, the Tucson Presidio Trust will be holding a ‘Living History’ event. All members of the community are encouraged to come and learn more about what life was like in Arizona between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries. Postcard printing may be in higher demand as the presidio's gift shop prepares for an increased number of customers.

Since the presidio is a replica of an old Spanish fort, the years of Spain's rule in Arizona will largely be the focus of the day's events. Attendees will have a chance to try Spanish colonial food, watch a traditional military drill, and hear stories about Tucson's past. All of the presidio's volunteers will be dressed in era clothing to help visitors visualize how the original citadel functioned on a typical day.

The event will be family friendly, and many school-aged children are expected to attend. Some of the day's activities, including an arts and crafts session, will be geared toward these young visitors. As a whole, the festivities will supplement what they have been learning in their classrooms during the week.

Living History Day will take place between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. There will be no fee for admittance. The presidio is located at 133 West Washington Street. Free street parking will be available in the area. Those seeking more information may call the Tucson Presidio Trust at (520) 837-8119.
