Charities earn millions of dollars from license plates

The Motor Vehicle Division of the Arizona Department of Transportation, with a regional office in Tucson, recently announced that over $6.5m was given to various charities last year as a result of its specialty license plates.

Specialty plates cost drivers $25, of which $17 goes to a designated charity or nonprofit group.

According to Eric Jorgensen, Director of the Motor Vehicle Division, this program enables the department to facilitate donations to people’s favorite charities. In addition to supporting great causes, it enables people to express their individuality and personalize their vehicles.

The most popular plate was that of the Arizona Cardinals, raising $1,087,677 for charities of the football team and their beneficiaries. Veterans and their families received $1,051,093 in benefits from the Arizona Veteran’s Donation Fund and $521,424 was raised for the Freedom/Military Support.

Michael Bidwell, President of the Cardinals, commented that seeing the Cardinals plates on the road, showing support of their charitable efforts, is very gratifying, in addition to the many other worthy causes that are being supported throughout the state.

Of the 60 different types of specialty plates that are available in Arizona, there are only a few, such as classic and historic vehicle plates, that are not connected to a charitable organization or nonprofit.

A printing company could do the applications for the Motor Vehicle Division with additional information about the plates.
