What's Happening in Scottsdale, AZ…

Scottsdale to think little

The Arizona Ponies of America Club will be holding pony competitions in a few days.

Since the first foal born back in 1954, the club has been breeding combinations of Appaloosa, Arabian, and AQHQ horses to create the gentle, pint-size (between 46 and 56 inches) equines that are loved by children and adults today. No doubt they will make great subjects for pictures that can be used for later poster printing.

Competitions will be divided into timed and non-timed events. Some non-timed events will be Bareback, Costume, Hunter Over Fences, Open Jumping and Western Pleasure. Timed events will include Texas Rollback, Single Pole, Goat Tying and Calf Daubing.

The Showmanship competition will be divided into three groups according to the rider’s age, such as10 years to 13, 14 through 18, and 19 and over. Routines that the animals are required to go through are called patterns, and the pattern configurations change from month to month. Typical patterns consist of five to eight specific maneuvers that are performed in front of a judge. The judge looks for general appearance, quality of the pony, a clean-cut arched neck, large protruding kind eyes, long muscular hindquarters, and a full ribbed, round muscled body.

The competition will be September 5, from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm, at West World of Scottsdale, 16601 North Pima Road, Scottsdale. Admission will be free.
