Scottsdale hosts Southwestern Amateur Championships

Scottsdale will host the 107th Southwestern Men’s and the 2nd Women’s Division Golf Championships in mid-June.

The event will be a competition featuring 72-hole stroke play. A line-up of 144 players – 72 men and 72 women – has been selected by the SWGA Selection committee based on play rankings and résumés.

On the eve of the event, Tuesday, June 14, player registration will be at the Cochise/Geronimo clubhouse and each competitor will get one practice round.

The next day, play will begin from 7:30 am to 9:36 am at holes 1 and 10 for the morning wave, and noon for the afternoon wave. The cut will lower the field to 36. A buffet breakfast and lunch will be provided for players in the clubhouse during the tournament.

On the Friday and Saturday, rounds three and four will be played with the awards ceremony immediately after.

This year the championships will be held on the Geronimo course, one of six designed by Jack Nicklaus, and perhaps the most visually intimidating. This course is 7,293 yards, with a slope of 145 and rating of 74.3. The course wends its way through deep washes, dramatic boulders, lush desert, and ravines. Amateur golf enthusiasts occasionally get the word out by arranging flyer printing before competitions like this.

The championships will be held June 15 through 18 at the Desert Mountain Club, 37700 N Desert Mountain Parkway. Admission will be free.
