Scottsdale celebrates season with music

The Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Virginia G. Piper Theater will present three eclectic Christmas-themed events in mid-December.

On December 12, beginning at 7:00 pm, “How the Sugar Thieves Stole Christmas” will be an evening of family-friendly Americana-style music of original and traditional holiday songs. The show will be performed by the Sugar Thieves, a high-energy five-member group consisting of acoustic guitar, sax, keys, bass, and drums, and Meridith Moore’s vocals.

The event will be available in person at the Virginia G. Piper Theater at 7380 E. 2nd Street, or virtually. Those patrons purchasing the $10 virtual tickets will receive access information by e-mail.

December 13 will see the non-profit local symphonic brass ensemble The Phoenix Brass Collective present an afternoon of holiday music, beginning at 2:00 pm. The group’s 16 musicians will play a holiday repertoire of well- and lesser-known classical works. This performance will also be broadcast virtually and in-person.

Mariachi Sol de Mexico, under the direction of Maestro Jose Hernandez, a fifth-generation mariachi musician, will present a holiday fiesta called “A Merry-achi Christmas” on December 19. Beginning at 8:00 pm. The program will be a blend of jazz, swing, pop, Broadway tunes and classical music with holiday favorites. In-person tickets will range from $39 to $59 and individual virtual tickets will be $35 while virtual household tickets will be $55.

Patrons of the arts are supporting performing arts centers such as this through monetary corporate gifts and individual donations.
