Outdoors beckons at McDowell Sonora Conservancy

On Christmas Day and the following day, the Scottsdale-based McDowell Sonora Conservancy is hosting three hikes.

On Christmas Day, Gate Way Trailhead at 18333 North Thompson Peak Parkway will be the starting point for a Christmas Day Fitness Hike. The Gateway Loop will take participants deep into the McDowells mountains. Skill level will be moderate and the 4.5-mile adventure will take approximately 2.5 hours. Hikers are to bring snacks and water. The hike will run from 9:00 am to 11:30 am.

Brown’s Ranch Trailhead at 30301 N Alma School Road will be the beginning of the Vaquero, Whiskey Bottle & Latigo Fitness Hike on the following morning, December 26, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. This five-mile hike will be on three picturesque trails, taking hikers through a diverse landscape and to a crested saguaro. Skill level will be moderate, and the hike will take about two and a half hours.

A slightly longer Gateway Trailhead to “Silver” Bell Pass Fitness Hike will be around seven miles. This has a skill level of “difficult” and will be a challenging but scenic trail taking about four and a half hours to complete. This hike will be December 26 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm, and begins at Gateway Trailhead, 18333 N. Thompson Peak Parkway.

Hikers usually like to take pictures along the trails. These photos often go to the local print shops for duplicates to be used in scrapbooks, newsletters, and personalized stationery.
