What's Happening in Scottsdale, AZ…

Arts center to present local jazz band

Scottsdale summer weekends are times for lying back and enjoying warm nights and, in keeping with that theme, the Phoenix New Times will present The Sugar Thieves Band as the third performance in its Live and Local Fridays concert series, bringing in a jazzy start to this weekend.

Over the last seven years, this band, based in Phoenix, has released five albums and won the ‘Arizona State Blues Showdown’ on three occasions. Known as the ‘Meat Shakin’ Blues Band’, the group plays a mixture of Mississippi, Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans selections as they blend gospel, folk, roots, and blues with a touch of jazz.

The band has an act dubbed ‘The Duo’, consisting of lead vocalist Meridith Moore and acoustic guitarist Mikel Lander, and they will serve as the evening’s opening act. Some who plan to attend may wish to have banner printing done to salute the group.

The Live and Local Fridays concert series is a series that features some of Arizona’s premier bands. The music this summer ranges from country rock and reggae to rhythm and blues. After the Sugar Thieves, the series will host the Caribbean Cruisers.

The concert will be this Friday, August 1, beginning at 8:00 pm at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ Virginia G. Piper Theater. Admission will be $10.
