The Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival will be returning in early to mid-April. Southwest filmmakers, activists, athletes, and educators will gather to view independent films in five “blocks.”
The Outdoor and Adventure Block will cover films in mountaineering, climbing, river expeditions, trail runs, Southwest desert exploration, and backcountry skiing. Climate and Environmental Films will include wildfire ecology, water rights, biodiversity, land stewardship and Colorado Plateau climate impact.
Another block will be Indigenous Storytelling films by Hope, Navajo, Havasupai, and Hualapai among other Indigenous people. These often include land-based storytelling, preserving language, cultural revitalization initiatives, and films made by reservation schools. The Human Rights and Social Justice block includes films about community resilience, food sovereignty, housing, borderlands stories and grassroots activism. Finally, the Youth Film Block will contain films made by local students.
On the opening night the welcome reception, a feature film, and a meet-and-greet with the filmmakers will take place. The Orpheum Theater will be the primary venue and will feature opening and closing nights, main screenings, and large panels. Other venues will include Beaver Street Theatre, Flagstaff Climbing, and Snow Mountain River. Various Downtown Flagstaff cafes and bars will be hosting mixers and after-parties.
Cash, sponsorships, and other screening opportunities will be the prizes awarded. Filmmakers at festivals like this often get Business Cards printed beforehand to help with networking during the meet-and-greets.
The Flagstaff Mountain Film Festival will take place April 8 through 12.
