What's Happening in Casa Grande, AZ…

Rotary Club plans auction with a twist

The Casa Grande Rotary Club provides scholarships to seniors who are graduating from schools in the city, and each year it has an auction as its major fundraiser.

For 2015, according to a recent news item, the Rotary is going to accept bids via cellphone for the first time.

Plans call for both a live and a silent auction. In the former, people hold up their hands or make another motion to let the auctioneer know that they want to bid on a lot. However, when it comes to the silent auction, bidding will be done by smartphone, as an ordinary cell phone would not work for this purpose.

The Rotary's Matt Herman explained the idea, saying people could text in a bid, and if they are outbid, the company handling the auction will send them a message to let them know. This way, he or she can bid again via text, if they desire. The Rotary has partnered with a firm known as GiveSmart, which has an interface allowing people to bid via phone.

Among the items in the silent auction are Diamondbacks tickets, gift baskets, and golf packages. The auction starts May 2nd at 6pm, and will be held at The Property Conference Center on Gila Bend Highway. Admission is $60 and dinner is included.

Rotary officials could work with poster printing shops to create banners for display in Casa Grande announcing the event.
