Casa Grande is hosting Shrek the Musical Jr. at the BlackBox Theatre this April.
The tale centers on an outcast ogre named Shrek who goes on an adventure with other fairytale misfits to rescue a princess. The green curmudgeon ultimately teaches those around him a powerful lesson that beauty is only skin-deep, softening his own heart in the process.
Despite its worldwide popularity, the story of Shrek in pop culture has humble beginnings. It began as a simple children’s book before being adapted into the 2001 DreamWorks animated film, which won an Academy Award and spawned multiple sequels.
From there, Shrek the Musical debuted on Broadway back in 2008 in New York City. It grossed over $40m and ran for over 400 shows. It was also nominated for a number of Tony Awards, ultimately winning one prize for Best Costume Design of a Musical.
The BlackBox Theatre iteration is an adaptation of that highly successful stage play, only with the “Jr.” added at the end of the title to signify it is being performed by child actors.
Musicals like this may choose to use banner printing to create marquees and stage decorations.
Shrek the Musical Jr. is playing for multiple shows each weekend from April 10 to 26, which includes both matinee and evening performances. All shows are happening at the BlackBox Theatre at 407 N Sacaton St in Casa Grande.
