A sign park opened in Casa Grande earlier this year, and a new sign has just been added to the location.
The opening of the Neon Sign Park has called attention to the historic significance of the vintage Signs used throughout Casa Grande, and has stirred interest in preserving them. The city's Community Services Department recently restored the old scoreboard from Cougar Stadium.
At present, the city's Historic Preservation Commission is tackling its most recent project, which is to nominate and designate historic Signs that have been previously identified as Local Sign Landmarks. The Cougar scoreboard is one of the Signs that will be given this designation. The only Local Sign Landmark in the city at present is the Dairy Queen sign, located downtown.
The Neon Sign Park is a combined effort of the community, the Casa Grande Historic Preservation Commission, and Casa Grande Main Street. Presentations about the Neon Sign Park were made at the annual Preservation Conference in June in Prescott, and in Wisconsin at the Society for Commercial Archaeology Conference, and generated plenty of positive media and feedback. Brochure printing can be used to create informative pamphlets about attractions like this.
When finished, the park will display 14 Signs, with 12 already in place. The 14th sign is the one for Ralph's Café for which fundraising to install the sign has just been completed, so the sign should be installed and lit soon.
