New traffic measures on track in Casa Grande

Two busy intersections in Casa Grande will be getting traffic signals soon.

The lights will be installed at the intersections of Casa Grande Avenue and McCartney Road; and Camino Mercado and Florence Boulevard. The installation of the lights was recently approved by the city council, and is expected to cost around $563,000.

The design for the Casa Grande Avenue/McCartney Road intersection is already done, which means the work could be completed this summer, according to Kevin Louis, the director of Public Works. He said he hoped the light would be in place by the time school started in the fall.

There are two schools in the area, a preschool and a middle school, which means the intersection is often congested. The snarled traffic causes concerns about safety, Louis says.

The second intersection, North Camino Mercado and Florence Boulevard, also experiences frequent holdups, which will get worse once a new convenience store opens at the intersection. The city feels it is important to get a signal installed quickly.

City officials might want to work with a flyer printing company on a mailer to city residents, warning them that signals will be going into operation soon, and they need to be aware of them to prevent the accidents that occur when drivers are not aware they will have to stop for a new light.
