New lanes on I-10 now open

Drivers heading west on Interstate 10 near Casa Grande now have three more lanes to use. The new lanes are part of a project widening a four-mile segment of I-10 in Pinal County. They run between mileposts 213 and 209, where they reconnect with I-10.

Crews shut down the right lane westbound overnight recently to allow workers to connect up the new lanes. Additional eastbound lanes should be added in approximately one month. The four-mile stretch is just part of a bigger effort by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to widen I-10 to three lanes in both directions between Tucson and Casa Grande. The project is expected to be completed late in 2019.

Other parts of the overall project include building a new interchange between I-10 and State Route 87, and installing a new dust-detection system. The system will warn drivers of oncoming dust storms, and also automatically adjust speed limits on electronic Signs, decreasing it from 75 mph to 35 mph as conditions worsen.

Funding for the project comes from a federal grant of $54 million. Officials working with projects like this can use poster printing to create appropriate signage to warn of changes.

Last October, ADOT officials announced they had entered an agreement with the Gila River Indian Community to study the possibility of widening a 23-mile stretch of I-10 where it crosses the reservation near Casa Grande.
