Casa Grande wins grant for preservation

American Express, in concert with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, sponsors an annual competition to decide which projects will be funded from a $1.5 million grant that is awarded each year. The winners are chosen by online voting, and this year, Casa Grande won $144,000 to improve its historic district.

The city will use the funds to build a park that will exhibit neon signs with a place in Casa Grande’s history. Officials hope that the park will be the first step in making the city a mecca for those who love all things mid-century modern.

The ‘Vintage Neon Sign Park’, as it will be named, will display five refurbished signs when it first opens, and then will add more over time. One of the first five will be from the Horseshoe Motel in Casa Grande, where it stood for years. A vintage Dairy Queen sign is coming from Holbrook; its owner donated it after learning of the project.

The nonprofit organization driving the project is Casa Grande Main Street. The organization’s director, Rina Rien, says the park is scheduled to open late in 2018, and she sees the park as a catalyst that could lead to important developments for the city.

Colorful projects like this are perfect subjects for brochures, which can use photographs of the signs as illustrations. Visitors can save and share them to remember the attraction.
