Casa Grande is in competition with 24 other cities to secure funding for an intriguing project – a neon sign park to be built in the city's downtown, according to an article on the ABC 15 website.
The Casa Grande Main Street and Historic Preservation Commission is the entity competing with other cities across the nation, all hoping to win as much as $150,000 for this project.
The Casa Grande project is the only one in Arizona in the competition, which is an effort of Main Street America, Partners in Preservation, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Geographic, and American Express. The 10 projects that get the most votes will be the winners.
The neon sign park envisioned by the commission would be a walkway running between the city's arts and business districts, and thereby connecting restaurants and shops to a local theater known as the Womans Club, as well as the Museum of Casa Grande and an art museum. Three Neon Signs, from a Dairy Queen, motor lodge, and an old hotel, would be the first neon installations in the park.
Casa Grande residents were asked to vote for the project by going to the website. People could submit as many as five votes each day, but voting ended yesterday, with winners announced tomorrow (November 2).
