Casa Grande votes to help the homeless

Early in August, the Casa Grande City Council voted unanimously in favor of a resolution supporting the Homelessness Strategic Plan and Goals.

The plan was put together by the Mayor’s Task Force on Homelessness, which was first formed in 2017, with 22 members from local churches and agencies, along with private citizens. The task force was given the goal of identifying and launching proven strategies to help reduce the incidence of homelessness in the city, according to an article on the city’s website.

Recently Craig McFarland, the mayor of Casa Grande, said that meetings with the task force revealed that homelessness is an ever-changing and complex issue, involving many people including veterans, domestic violence victims, people with mental illnesses, and families with children. He also said that homelessness is a national problem, but Casa Grande has shown a great desire to finding solutions and responding in ways that will mitigate the problem in the city. Officials dealing with issues like this can use brochure printing to create a booklet describing the efforts and progress to date.

Progress by the task force includes creating a strategic plan with seven goals: developing affordable housing; providing transitional housing and temporary shelters; developing education and support services; considering public safety; engaging the community; helping targeted populations; and dealing with financial matters. The next step in addressing the problem is to let members of the public see the plan, and offer their input.
