Casa Grande underpass to get new look

An underpass in Casa Grande could have a new look soon.

In 2019, the Arts and Humanities Commission recommended adding design and art elements to an underpass on West Gila Bend Highway, where it runs beneath the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The Casa Grande City Council accepted the recommendation, and recently announced a contractor has responded to the request.

Ellison-Mills Contracting has sought approval as the construction manager at risk on the upcoming project, according to Gloria Leija, the City Clerk. Leija noted the city hoped to beautify the physical environment at the site by introducing landscaping, signs, mosaic tiles, metal art, and paint. The theme of the project will be the railroad, as well as the multicultural history of the city.

The project has many different elements involved, not to mention traffic control, and as such a lot of coordination and planning has gone into the effort, which has taken time. However, if Ellison-Mills wins the contract, it is expected they will start the project in June and finish within 90 days. Banner printing can be used to create signage to celebrate the completion of projects like this.

Leija also noted there are a number of organizations involved including the BlackBox Foundation, Casa Grande Maine Street, the CG Mosaic Creative Communities Team, the Casa Grande Arts and Humanities Commission, the City of Casa Grande, and Art Mobile-AZ.
