Although the school year just ended, food service employees of the Casa Grande Elementary School District will be working through the summer, feeding hungry
children. According to a recent news article, the program is more than 30 years old, and provides free meals to children younger than 18, on weekdays, with the exception of holidays.
This year, it's estimated that 400 breakfasts as well as 800 lunches will be served each day, all of which are available to the children without cost. Breakfasts usually include fruit and juice, along with an entrée like French toast. Lunches comprise an entree as well as vegetables, fruit, juice, and milk. Although the program aims to serve healthy, nutritious food, the children have favorites, including sliders, and pizza, which are served frequently, according to Food Services director Germaine Davenport.
The meals are served throughout the area at 25 sites, according to Davenport. She notes that two additional sites were added this year to serve more children. One is at Center Park Apartments, and the other is at New Beginnings Church. In addition, five air-conditioned school buses are used as sites to serve meals, so the children don't have to eat outside in the heat.
The district could consider working with a flyer printing company to create a mailer about the program, particularly since they have added new sites for meal service this year.
