Casa Grande honors local heroes
The Casa Grande Fire Department recently honored a law enforcement official and several firefighters, as well as an 11-year-old boy, for their braveness.
The awards, known as ‘Life Saver Awards’, were given on November 12. One award went to Francisco Lujan, a corporal with the Casa Grande Police Department, who responded to an emergency call on August 5. He arrived at the scene to find a man who had suffered a heart attack and was not breathing. Lujan performed CPR until firefighters arrived and continued to work on him, then took him to the hospital. For their efforts in saving the man's life, five firefighters—Jason Andersen, Pete Benzing, Ernie Delgado, Byron Mays, and Kevin Madden—received Life Saver Awards, along with Lujan.
On September 8, young Alex Steen showed his courage. Alex, his sister, and their grandmother were on their way to the bus stop when the older woman fell, cutting her leg. Alex remained calm, called for help, and put pressure on the wound to control the bleeding until help came and took his grandmother to the hospital. Alex was given the Courage in the Community Award for his bravery and quick thinking.
Casa Grande officials might work with stationery printers to add the names of these seven heroes to the city's official letterhead for some period of time.
